The number of homes sold at sheriff's sales in Northampton County more than doubled to 99 properties during the first three months of the year, according to the county's sheriff department, which handles the sales.

In Lehigh County , 94 homes sold at sheriff's sale in January, February and March, nearly double the number in 2007. That's a turnaround from last year. While foreclosures were already on the rise in 2007 in Northampton County, the number of homes sold at sheriff's sales had fallen in Lehigh County, compared with 2006. Read more

Billy Kounoupis, owner of Billy's Downtown Diner, is under contract to buy the Perkins building, which sits one block south of Centre Square and Two Rivers Landing, Easton's popular tourist destination, city officials said Wednesday.

''I feel it's an exciting addition to the downtown and will have a positive impact,'' said Kim Kmetz, manager of Easton's downtown Main Street program. Read more

The county has been poised since fall to take title to the 1753 building at Second and Northampton streets from the Easton Heritage Alliance in lieu of foreclosing on the property because of the alliance's default on a $500,000 county loan in 2006.

After necessary votes from the alliance board and general membership in December 2007, the holdup remains getting an accurate accounting of the building's contents. Read more

The ordinance, expected to be introduced by City Council on Wednesday, also would make it a crime for a person to carry items such as aerosol cans and felt-tip markers if police believe they are going to be used for the purpose of graffiti.

If approved, it would become the city's first anti-graffiti law and give city officials the tools they say they need to stem the growing problem of graffiti, which they link to gang activity and urban blight. Read more

According to unofficial results from all 15 precincts, Elinor Warner was the top vote-getter with 1,936 votes, followed by Jeff Warren with 1,861 votes and incumbent Ken Brown with 1,770 votes.

Republicans Roger Ruggles, Bill Timmann and Peter Melan garnered 1,660, 897 and 888 votes, respectively.

Council has been solely Democratic since 2002. Now it will work with former Mayor Sal Panto Jr., who regained the office after 17 years, defeating Republican Gary Bertsch by a nearly 2-1 margin. Read more
