`Mission mall' makes your gift giving easier
“And you know this is really going to help somebody. A very integral part of the Methodist faith is that you give in service.”
The day after Halloween brings a new scare -- the start of Christmas shopping. Who to buy for, what's the perfect gift for each person, how to pay for it all.
First United Methodist Church of Gastonia has a different way to think about shopping.
The gift-less gift.
On Nov. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the church will have its third 'mission mall' so people can honor their loved ones with gifts to Gaston County charities.
Here's how it works: The different local agencies the church supports make long lists of items they need priced from $1 to $500. Shoppers visit the agencies' booths and 'buy' a pair of socks for the homeless shelter or maybe a day's worth of meals for the West Gastonia Boys and Girls Club. The agencies give shoppers a card and envelope to send their gift recipients. Read more
