Six years after the financial crisis, New Hampshire still has three times as many home foreclosures as occurred before the Great Recession, although the number is fallen sharply in part because an unusual state program has helped almost 750 households through their mortgage troubles. "Could consumers do a lot of this on their own? Sometimes they could, but it's mind-numbing," said Paul McLaughlin, one of 13 counselors who have been advising homeowners facing foreclosure under a state program called HomeHelpNH. Comment?

There are many policy issues that consume our elected officials today, but considerable attention is paid to identifying ways to lessen the burden on businesses in order to spur economic growth in our state. Indeed, legislators are currently contemplating a change in law that would lower business taxes, and politicians routinely talk of the value of reducing regulations and fees that add to the cost of doing business. According to RealtyTrac's U.S. foreclosure market report, in the first quarter of 2009, 803,489 properties or one in every 159 housing units received a foreclosure filing, including default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions. "In the month of March we saw a record level of foreclosure activity - the number of households that received a foreclosure filing was more than 12 percent higher than the next highest month on record," said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac, in a press release. Comment?

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage ticked down to 3.84 percent this week from 3.85 percent a week earlier. The rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages slipped to 3.05 percent from 3.07 percent. Comment?
