As the Chicago area continues to dig itself out from a housing crisis that has hit the suburbs hard in recent years, the first half of 2014 did bring some good news. From January to June of this year, the Chicago area saw the lowest level of new foreclosure filings since 2007, according to recent data released by the Woodstock Institute, a research and policy organization that specializes in fair lending, wealth creation and financial systems reform. A grand jury has indicted Shadwick King on two counts of murder in the July death of his wife in west suburban Geneva, the Elgin Courier News is reporting. King, 47, is accused of killing his wife "by means of asphyxia" on July 6. Kathleen King's body was found on the Union Pacific railroad tracks south of Esping Park not far from the couple's home on Oak Street, according to authorities and the indictment. Comment?

The state Attorney General's Office is investigating Santander Bank's auto-lending business over concerns the company may be engaged in the type of predatory practices that, on a larger scale, led to the mortgage and financial crises. The office is looking at whether Santander lent to borrowers who were unlikely to repay the money and sold those loans to Wall Street, where they were packaged into securities and resold to investors.
