Single-family home sales rose in August, compared with last year, as the median price paid for those homes dipped to $178,000. The total volume of home sales for the state's busiest month for real estate transactions rose 3.3 percent from one year ago, bucking a national and regional decline in single-family home sales, according to a transaction tracking service maintained by the Maine Association of Realtors. A debt collector's lawsuit against Glenn Geiser, former owner of closed Bangor used car dealership My Maine Ride , seeking overdue home mortgage payments has revealed Geiser owed more than $2.6 million to other creditors, including the Maine Revenue Service and the Internal Revenue Service. The complaint for foreclosure against Geiser, 49, of Brewer was filed Dec. 30, 2014 at the Penobscot Judicial Center by Charles Boyle, attorney for legal firm Bendett & McHugh, which specializes in debt collection . The finance website SmartAsset.com has mapped out the country's most affordable places to live, comparing home buying and home ownership costs - like average property tax bills, homeowners' insurance and mortgage payments - against median income levels and deriving a composite "affordability index." The index doesn't, as far as I can tell, include other costs associated with living someplace, such as food or electricity prices, but paints a pretty complete picture in terms of acquiring and maintaining a home. PORTLAND, Maine - The two-year budget proposal Gov. Paul LePage unveiled Friday aims to divert state government's chief revenue stream from income taxes on people and businesses to sales tax. The governor's proposal would eliminate many exemptions and add sales taxes on a range of services, from a magician performing at a child's birthday party to hiring a real estate agent. Comment?

Researchers looked at survey responses from adults aged 25 to 31 across the United States and found that those with higher student loan debt reported higher levels of depressive symptoms. "We are speculating that part of the reason that these types of loans are so stressful is the fact that you cannot defer them, they follow you for the rest of your life until you pay them off," study author Katrina Walsemann, of the University of South Carolina, said in a university news release.
