Sales of new and existing homes in the Lehigh Valley dropped by 2.1 percent, to 6,585 in 2014, compared with 6,727 in 2013, according to a report released Wednesday by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach's HomExpert Market Report. The rough beginning to 2014 led to the flat overall sales, said Brad Patt, senior vice president and region manager with Berkshire Hathaway. Comment?

Home prices nationally are now within 3 percent of the peak they reached in March 2007. The Federal Housing Finance Agency released its purchase only Home Price Index for February showing that home prices increased 0.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis compared to January and were 5.4 percent higher than in February 2014. As we near the vote to raise the sales tax to fund our abysmal roads, we've heard this question come up quite a bit these last few months: "Why couldn't the Legislature just do the job they were elected to do instead of passing responsibility off to the voters?" We haven't given our legislators the chance to do their jobs because we've cauterized a deep-seeded distrust into statutes and amendments to the state constitution. Potholes are just one concrete example of how Michigan's culture of distrust in politics has hurt our government's ability to function. Comment?
