A Newton man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing injuries that doctors believe will result in permanent neurological damage to a 5-month-old girl.

Associated Press - July 14, 2009 1:14 PM ET IOWA CITY, Iowa - A paralyzed inmate being held in the Iowa Medical and Classification Center outside Iowa City is costing Linn County taxpayers more than $3,000 daily.

They may be serving time for a variety of reasons, but Tuesday, several offenders donned a cap and gown to receive their GEDs.

Iowa County Sheriff officials said Tonch Weldon, charged with first-degree murder, was transferred from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to the medical wing of Iowa Medical and Classification Center, 2700 Coral Ridge Ave., Coralville.
