Full story: Blog Town, PDX

as an immigrant who lived in portland maine for 20+ yrs, I have 3 comments
1. Progressive young Whites progress (many from else where) have different priorities and do not connect with minority group like Hispanics and Blacks - even after they have their own kids.
2. Blacks in Porltand has lot more resources, proud tradition and many great heros to look after than most other parts of the country. But I don't see Blacks continue to separate from proud past of 60's and not bond like other minority groups do. Able blacks move out, marry white girls, become super atheletes. Meanwhile intellectual like Professor Gibson offers no solution and repeats same thing over and over again.
3. While some blacks demmonize Koreans as a racist grocery owners, Koreans have many many churches where they bond more than their faith but net working, business venturing, protecting thier own kids from harms outside (very same thing black church used to). Many Asian kids are not most articulate, atheletic but they accepted what they have and try to better themselves - at times to the levle of torture - end result can be found highest income, highest education, lowest crime rate, highest engineers, nurses, doctors per race group.
Whenever I go to volunteer at local elementary school, often brightest kid is black or biracial kids but 2 or 3 yrs later same kid is not into education.. why??

I am Native American and yes there still is alot of Racism in Portland Oregon. I see how some white people at some stores sterotype minorities and follow them inside the stores and they assume I am Spanish speaking and make fun of minorites. I have been harrassed numerous times recently. Especially on the Max or the Trimet busses. I just deal with my Native Americaness with Pride and I will never be put down for my racial identity. I REFUSE TO LET THIS HAPPEN!

Well, a lot of those Progressives are gay voters too. And after Prop 8 in Cali, and the reaction by many black folks in Portland and other places claiming homosexuals do not deserve civil rights, it comes as no surprise to me that many white Progressives no longer feel so chummy with a homophobic black population. Whereas gays and lesbians, mostly white, traditionally supported civil justice movements, they were not prepared to be hit between the eyes by black voters that are in favor of discriminating against gays and lesbians in the law. Where once there had been a facade of unity, now a divide has grown.

I think nobody should be discrimanated against for any reason. I don't believe a real choice can be made by one person. Who all do you know that is backstabbing the views your speaking of. I don't any black people that were supported by Gay and lesbians that voted against Equal rights for them also. Nobody in their right mind would do such a thing, especially when this has happend to them too. I do believe your wrong, what proof do you have. Is in the papers from the NAACP or something? What psysical proof are you talking about anyway!

There is a disconnect between many of the leaders in the black community and the poeple in the black community. Coretta Scott King, a leader in her own right has come out in favor publically for equal rights for gays and lesbians and all queer people. Same is true for most of the Congressional Black Congress.

But all you have to do to see how many black people are against equal rights for gays and lesbians is talk to people on the street or on line. There are tons of black folks right here on Topix that make no bones about how they feel about gay people. They don't like 'em and don't believe they deserve equal rights. In fact the favorite thing said about gays and lesbians is that gays and lesbians are not a race, so they have no right asking for equal civil rights. Check it out for yourself. Don't take my word for it.

Just because a group has been discrimiated against does not automatically make them incapable of discrimiating against other people. Most black church leaders are against equal rights for gays, and anyone that has spent time in the black community knows that black religious leaders hold a great deal of sway with the population. That's a fact.

Many black people are so homophobic that gay black men have to be on the down low all of the time. Because if they came out, they'd lose their family, their church, their place in the black community. I dated a black gal, and she put up with all kinds of s***. One of my best friends is black, and she has said that she is not sure what was worse, being gay in a str8 society, or gay in the black community. Many black folks would like to believe there are no gay black men or women.

I had a gay black man as housemate several years ago, and he said he dated all kinds of black men that would only get with him on the down low. Because they did not want the stigma of being gay. So, he said they pretended to be str8 while having sex with him and other men, but only on the down low.

Homophobia is still rampant is most of the black population. Most black people aren't into gay bashing, but most also don't think gays should be able to marry or raise kids together, etc. They are into that separate but equal thang, but keep it quiet and out of the public eye, and never bring it to church or into polite company.

Yes, homophobia exists in the Black community, but it also exists in other communities as well. Prop 8 did not pass because the organizers did not do their jobs and do grassroots organization. They assumed and paid for their assumption. Remember there were Whites, Latinos, and Asians that voted against Prop 8 as well, but somehow they were not the scapegoat, as that was specifically directed at the Black Community. Let’s be clear in understanding that the only reason Blacks were blamed for Prop 8 was because a Black man was elected as POTUS.

May I also add that some of the most racist and discriminatory people in the US are gay folks. Let us not make any delusions about the fact that gay folks can and are in many instances just as bigoted in their view of Blacks as any White Supremacist. Before demonizing all Blacks, look at the gay folks who were quick to call Blacks the N-word. In some cases, Black gay folks were being called this in California.

Last but not least, Progressive are only liberal in theory, but in their actual application, they are no different than that in which they say they oppose.

People in Portland, Oregon, are a bunch of spineless, liberal wusses.

I don't know if you guys have noticed it or not, but scab covered mutant liberals tend to congregate along both coasts.

I'm guessing there's something about warm ocean currents that causes them to mutate, which would certainly explain the entire state of Hawaii bending over when Obama dropped the soap.

Yep, an awful lot of gays and lesbians ARE racist. You will get no argument from me about that. Just ask people in the trans community about discrimination lobbed at them from the gay and lesbian population. No doubt at all.

I do think it was a surprise on both sides for a lot of people that gays which suffer from discrimination, and black folks, which continue to also suffer from institutionalized racism discriminate against one another. I would imagine the Conservaturds love that s***, because it reveals both sides as hypocrites. No better than the people they rail against for discriminating against them.

But like I posted above, if you think it is bad being black, or I think it is bad being lesbian, imagine what it is like being a black gay or lesbian person? That really sucks bad.

I grew up in the black community, so I already knew that a lot of black folks including their leaders did not support equality for queers. It didn't surprise me a bit. And I also wasn't surprised to see a lot of white gay dudes pull out the "N"-word ala Michael Richards as soon as they got p*ssed off at black voters.

But the bottom line is that if gays and black folks cannot reach some accord to support one another, they will fall prey to the old divide and conquer strategy that Conservaturds expertly utilize to get their way, and they like to discriminate against gays and black folks, not to mention women, poor people, and anyone else they can take advantage of like a pack of rabid wolves.

As far as Progressives go, you paint with wayyyy too broad a brush twinkles. Many of us in the LGBT community have been puhing to educate well-to-do queers about the plight of black and minority people in general for deacades. Like anything else, it takes time to educate ignorant people. believe me, as a working class dyke, I've taken my share of s*** from the larger lesbain community comfortable in their ivory towers, and isolated from the discrimination experienced by minorities, women, and working class folks all of our lives.

I'd rather live amongst a minority non-white population than amongst a bunch of white people anyday. It's all about keeping it real. Hell, I don't even believe in race. It's something made up by white men in the 17th century to legitimize slavery and mistreatment of indigenous people in America and around the world. An excuse to feel better about themselves when they went to church on Sundays.

Conservaturds will burn in hell for their lies and deceit. Jesus is comin' for ya boy, and he is p*ssed about you using his name to do the work of Satan.
