City lays down poverty reduction plan

WITH the growing population of people who are living below the poverty threshold, leaders from various sectors in Cagayan de Oro have traced the roots of the "answer" to gradually alleviate what is common among communities in the country and the world at large. Teodoro Sabuga-a Jr., chief of the City Social Welfare and Development , said that education has been the principal answer to alleviate, if not eradicate, the number of Kagay-anons suffering from the society's "most dangerous disease."

Dec. 17 is target date for passing Bangsamoro Basic Law

Calendared for first reading Monday, September 14, the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law, now known as House Bill 4994, is targeted for passing by December 17 this year so the plebiscite be held "February or March" next year, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, who will chair the Special Ad Hoc Committee on the Bangsamoro, said. Rodriguez told MindaNews in a telephone interview Sunday that the 75-member special committee will hold its first organizational meeting on September 16 and its first public hearing on September 24. He said the Committee secretariat had met on September 11, a day after Malacanang submitted the "urgent" measure to Congress, to discuss the proposed rules and calendar of hearings.

Anti-mining Lumad leader in Cagayan de Oro killed

A leader of the Higaonon tribe who is a staunch anti-mining activist was gunned down by unidentified assailants while riding home on a motorcycle in the hinterland village of Tuburan, this city Saturday afternoon, police said. Senior Inspector Allan Engracia Curato , commander of the Lumbia police station said the 64-year old Fausto Orasan, also known as "Datu Sandigan," succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the back of his body.

Families of captive soldiers seek truce

AFTER the New People's Army voiced its plans to free two soldiers who were captured last August 22 in Bukidnon, families of Jerrel Yorong and Marnel Cinches, have asked the government to suspend its military and police operations for the smooth turnover of the captives. Suspect in Oro jewelry heist shot dead in...

ONE of the suspected perpetrators in the jewelry heist inside a mall in Cagayan de Oro died after being shot by a group of unidentified suspects in Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental Wednesday morning. Youth group cries foul over - military espionage'
