Where was the story BEFORE this weekend? 28 years? I live in Isle and I have never heard of it.

Why, that's impossible! It says right in the article that it's a "world class event"!

I was at the first and last race across Mille Lacs Lake. It was called the "ultimate challenge" for a good reason. In the last race only 1/3 of the racers finished. I did not finish. Over all the racers were extremely good sailors, and most would have no problems with the 20-30 mph winds if they were on flat water. But the design of the race allows the waves to build for around 15 miles. Theses waves were 5 to 6 feet high and eliminated all but the elite of the sport.
The staff Mike Fox had to run this event were a dedicated group. Safety was always first on their minds. Although there were some injured, these were the people in the support boats. Over the years the equipment got faster and more advanced. No longer could you take a beginner board and be competitive. I have many memories about the races in the past. And enough stories about them to keep a column going a year. Thank you Michael Fox for 28 great years.
