Circleville man dies on whitewater-rafting trip

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

A Pickaway County man died yesterday after he was knocked into the Upper Gauley River while whitewater-rafting in West Virginia, a spokesman for the National Park Service said.

Wow... We've done this river twice now w/ little or no trouble. So sorry to hear such bad news from such a beautiful spot!!

This is a tough section of river to tackle, which is why most outfitters require previous rafting experience before you to do it. A lot of rafters get tossed overboard like these guys when they hit the Class V rapids. If you go into the water, it's a real crapshoot whether you're going to be slammed into a rock and knocked out.

Yes,all the rafting companies require/provide helmets, along with safety instructions. I have never seen anyone on that river without a helmet. A helmet with protect the head, but not the internal damage suffered with a sudden stop at high impact. Insignificant is the first class 5 on that river. I am so sorry to hear this happened.

I knew Eric. A good man. Young wife and children are left behind. What a tragedy. He'll be missed.
