The annual A River Runs Thru History rendezvous sponsored by the I&M Canal authority shows visitors what life was like along the Des Plaines River during the fur trade era.

Burloak's Perrone wins two of Canada's four gold at Pan Am championships
Burloak Canoe Club paddler Jillian Perrone won two of Canada's four gold medals at the Pan American Sprint Canoe Championships in Mexico, helping her country rank second in the meet's overall point standings. Perrone won the junior women's canoeing singles 200-metre race and teamed with Juliette Brault of Pointe-Claire, Que., to win the canoeing doubles 500m.

It's been 50 years since the Wilderness Act was signed into law to protect natural areas not yet developed across the United States, and today, a Minnesota couple says this anniversary is just one reason they're taking a nearly 2,000 mile canoe trip across the country to Washington D.C. For Dave and Amy Freeman, the other reason is their opposition to proposed sulfide mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area, a place they've both grown to love. "We don't feel that it can be done safely, and we don't feel the edge of the Boundary Waters, the most popular wilderness area in the country, is an appropriate location for what the EPA calls the nation's most polluting industry," Dave Freeman said.
