With demand high, praise for crackdown on 2010 Olympic ticket scalpers

“It's unacceptable to us to have companies that sign agreements saying they will not sell tickets to ticket brokers to go ahead and do that”

- A plan to crack down on people attempting to scalp tickets to the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver is being applauded by Canada's Olympic committee and Games sponsors.

Vancouver's Olympic organizers promised hyper-vigilance on the resale of tickets when pricing was announced last fall. But with this month's deadline for sponsors and Olympic committees to put in their requests for tickets, they're stepping up counter-scalping measures.

One national Olympic committee has already been targeted for promising gold medal hockey tickets to a ticket broker, despite not yet having any tickets in hand. Read more

Private security firms say no way to meet demand of 2010 Winter Games

“The event has taken on much more of a difficult situation because of the weapons of mass destruction threat”

- There's no way the private security industry can meet the demands from either Olympic organizers or the RCMP for help during the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, industry professionals say.

Both Vancouver's Olympic Organizing committee and the Integrated Security Unit in charge of policing the Games are seeking private security firms, as well as existing institutions that want to beef up their own security.

It means the already-stressed industry simply can't keep up.

"There are very competent people who are part of the (Olympic) planning process," said Leo Knight, senior vice-president of Paladin Security, a Vancouver-based private security firm. Read more

Sweden boss Naslund takes wait-and-see approach to IIHF World Championship

“If we get our best team we have a chance to compete with the best. This year, unfortunately, we had no luck with the NHL players.

"So we're looking forward to the quarter-finals and we'll go from there.”

- No general manager at the IIHF World Hockey Championship has had as much bad luck as Sweden's Mats Naslund.

The former Montreal Canadiens star watched in disbelief as one-by-one, Sweden's star players began to fall by the wayside leading up to the tournament.

First, it was Mats Sundin's groin. Then it was Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson's knee. When it was all said and done, more than 20 players declined an invitation to the tournament.

Naslund, one of the architects of the 2006 gold medal-winning Swedish entry at the Winter Olympics, has had to make due, combining Swedish league veterans with a number of fringe NHLers and Calder Trophy-candidate Nicklas Backstrom. Read more
