    Lassiter chasing city honor after 806 series

    Lamont Lassiter knew heading into the 2014-15 bowling season this could be his last chance to contend for Topeka bowler of the year honors for the foreseeable future. Lassiter had been asked by his wife to spend more time with their youngest daughter, a 6-year-old who is involved in swimming and gymnastics, so he had bargained for one more year of bowling two nights a week.

    Topeka Fire Department honors firefighters who died ...

    A bugler pierced the air with the mournful sound of "Taps" Saturday afternoon, standing high atop a training tower at Topeka Fire Department headquarters, Below, a bagpiper then played "Amazing Grace" to end a ceremony the department holds annually to honor its firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Those seven firefighters represented the "best of our community" while upholding the ideals of commitment, dedication, selflessness and honor, said Fire Marshal Mike Martin.

    Autopsy: Driver was intoxicated in crash that killed...

    The driver in a one-vehicle, rollover accident that killed himself and a baby girl March 10 had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit, according to an autopsy report. The autopsy conducted by former Shawnee County District Coroner Donald L. Pojman showed Brian Lee Riley, 33, of Topeka, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.166 percent at the time of his death.
