    Essick was a memorable teacher, endearing friend

    Friends and former students reminisced this week about Rose Essick, saying she was deeply religious, gracious and never afraid to offer her opinion. The longtime Burbank resident and educator died April 11. She was 91. Rose Lydia Koumjian was born May 28, 1923 in Hollywood.

    Clinton - CLINTON - Lois L. Notaro, 80, died Thursday, April 16, 2015 in River Terrace Healthcare, Lancaster, after an illness. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph P. Notaro, Sr.; two sons: Joseph P. Notaro, Jr., and David A. Notaro, Sr., and his wife, Heidi, of Clinton; a daughter, Susan E. Knecht and her husband, James, of Somerville, AL; a sister, Nancy Ridderbusch, of Portland, OR; seven grandchildren: Stephanie, Emily, Joseph, David, Jr., Dominic, Sandra, and Zoe; and four great-grandchildren.

Kenary of Millbury and Doris E. Carey of Portland, OR; two nephews, John W. Kenary and Richard N. Kenary Jr. both of Millbury; four nieces, Maura Barbato of Sutton, Janet K. Dumas of Millbury, Linda C. Larkin and Susan B. Carey both of Portland, OR; eight grand nieces and nephews and seven great great nieces and nephews.

    A man died early Wednesday after suffering burns from an open fire near North Charleston and North Ivanhoe streets, in Portland. A 45-year-old Portland man died early Wednesday at Legacy Emanuel Hospital after his clothes caught fire on the city's north side.

    City OKs urban renewal shuffle after making concessi...

    The Portland City Council agreed to one final concession Wednesday to affordable housing advocates, clearing the way to grant final approval to Mayor Charlie Hales' plan to reshape the city's urban renewal program. The council unanimously agreed to a resolution committing the city to break ground on an affordable housing project in the South Waterfront area by 2017 and to acquire a second affordable housing site in that area within the next eight years.
