    Fannie Martin-Williams said her father was 97 when he died Sunday at his home in New Bern. She said Martin had little memory of his father, Luke Martin Sr., who died at age 84 in 1920 when the son was just a few years old.

    Young mother remembered for her smile, generous spirit

    On Sunday night, a young New Bern area mother lost her life at age 28. But while Lindsey Barnett Whitfield's life was cut short, her compassion and contagious smile will live on through the memories of her friends. "She had one of the sweetest smiles," said Ervin Sadler of Alliance.

    Since 1982, he was the man we all turned to for the weather in the greater New Bern area - and the seemingly happy-go-lucky guy who rode in parades, announced Christmas boat regattas and made himself known in the aftermath of physical disasters and in area schools. Harold Ray Waters Jr., the 61-year-old meteorologist known as Skip Waters at WCTI-TV 12 for 33 years, died in his home on Oct. 28 from natural causes.

    Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22, had been an officer with the New Bern police force for only seven months when his life was cut short at Craven Terrace. According to a report later issued by the District Attorney's office, Thalmann was on routine patrol late on the night of March 28 when he spotted Bryan "Shoot" Stallings, 33, riding a bicycle without lights in the dark and rain.
