    Mourners pay last respects to Jersey City man killed...

    Mourners are lining up to pay their last respects at the open casket of a Jersey City man who was gunned down on the street Saturday following a minor car accident in Bergen/Lafayette. "It seems unreal," said Richard Washington, who with about 300 others attending the viewing of his longtime friend, Michael Settles, 36, at the Porter Memorial Church of God in Christ on Ocean Avenue.

    Stations of Cross to be staged at sites of violence

    More than a dozen congregations, representing Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, Protestants and Roman Catholics perform the Stations of the Cross tomorrow, Good Friday, by visiting 14 sites of violent incidents in Jersey City over the past 12 months. At each station, a nail will be driven into an 8-foot cross being carried during the procession and participants will pray for the victim who suffered at that location.

    Michael Leiner, 48, of Milford, Pa., formerly of North Arlington, died March 29, 2015, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, N.Y. Born in Jersey City, Mr. Leiner lived in Kearny and North Arlington before moving to Pennsylvania in 2005. He is a 1984 graduate of Kearny High School.

    Epps, former Jersey City superintendent and assembly...

    More than 500 people packed St. Patrick's Church Saturday morning to mourn the death of former Jersey City schools superintendent Charles T. Epps Jr., but also celebrate a life lived in service of his community. Epps, a longtime Jersey City educator who was the district's chief administrator for 10 years ending in 2011, died on March 17. He was 70. Several people lauded Epps for his contributions to the district and as a friend.

    Funeral for former Jersey City schools chief set to ...

    JERSEY CITY -- Hundreds of people are streaming into a Jersey City church this morning to mourn the death of former Schools Superintendent Charles T. Epps Jr. With less than an hour before Epps' funeral is set to begin, about a hundred people have already arrived at St. Patrick's Church at Bramhall and Ocean avenues, and more are coming through the doors every minute. Epps, a longtime Jersey City educator who was the district's chief administrator for 10 years ending in 2011, died on March 17. He was 70. At the front of the church, a prominent sign for the Jersey City Education Association is displayed above Epps' open casket, where a line of people has formed to pay respects to the man.
