    Today, as many of us are still swaddled by family, we remind you of some of the people whose sacrifices have ensured our freedoms to celebrate the season however we wish. This story about the a quarter of a million forgotten veterans ran across the Patch network on Memorial Day Weekend, when a few of them were buried with full military honors as part of Dearborn's annual Memorial Day celebrations.

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- His smiling face was seen by thousands on the West side of Grand Rapids over the years, and as word spread that Jerry Drake, commonly known as Jerry The Flower Man, had lost his battle to illness, dozens felt compelled to do something in his memory. "I realized he had a lot of friends, but I had no idea it impacted the community this much," said Debbie Myers, who took care of Jerry for many years.

    Nathan Seyfer Moore, 28, died on Sunday, Dec. 21 after being shot during an after-hours party at a Grand Rapids barbershop. Moore is survived by parents Judy Gonzales and Joseph Moore; two children, Ahzarriah Moore and Jeremiah Beal; sisters Yvonne Hernandez, Jan-e and Cattore Moore; brothers Joey and Michael Moore; girlfriend Maria Montalvo; and several extended family members.

    A 56-year-old Grand Rapids man has been arrested for the beating death of 23-year-old Joel Battaglia on Lake Drive SE more than two decades ago. Kent County Jail records show that Aurelias Marshall is held in jail on an open murder charge for the June 11, 1990 death.

    The widow of a man who died after crashing his motorcycle is suing the Kent County Road Commission saying it was lack of road maintenance that killed her husband. The Kent County Commission flatly denies her claim and points the finger at another rider as causing the death of helmetless cyclist Matthew Michael Denney on the morning of May 18 along Peach Ridge Avenue north of 8 Mile Road NW.

    She was born one of 13 children on September 1, 1932 in Grand Rapids, Mich ., to Walter and Jane Anderson and moved to Washington in 1974. Vi worked as a CNA at a care center and loved to make pies, crochet and bowl.

    Robert Williams, Sr, passes at age 78

    Pompano Beach, FL...December 10, 2014...Robert J. Williams, Sr., 78, one of the most respected horsemen in harness racing, passed away on Tuesday, December 9. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 14, 1936, Bob Williams is, perhaps, best known for driving Diamond Exchange to victory in the second edition of the World Trotting Derby in DuQuoin, Illinois in 1982 He he also was the author of the very first 1:55 trotting mile at The Meadowlands with that same trotter the following season.

    Eight months after a 1 1/2-year-old girl was found unresponsive in her mother's apartment and later pronounced dead, police are still working to determine who is responsible for the lethal dose of morphine that killed her.     Curt H. Veeneman, 61, a faithful man who loved his family and the Lord, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, after a long illness. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Aug. 4, 1953, Curt received his B.A. at the University of Grand Valley, M.A. and M.F.A. degrees at University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley, all in music composition and theory.
