    When you watch Dereck Goff give commands in the obedience ring, it's difficult to imagine that just two months ago the young man had never had any prior hands-on experience with Man's Best Friend. The 18-year-old Fairhaven High School senior and Boy Scout had never owned a pet and knew little about dogs, but decided last November to earn a merit badge in Dog Care, which required that he learn basic obedience training and emergency medical procedures.

    Local police among those attending funerals of slain...

    ACUSHNET - Several officers from Acushnet and Fairhaven paid their respects to slain officers in New York City by attending their funerals over the past two weekends.  "I went to honor a brother officer that died just doing his job," said Sgt. Christopher Richmond of Acushnet, who attended the funeral for Officer Rafael Ramos on Dec. 28.  Liu, 32, and Ramos, 40, were shot to death on Dec. 20 as they sat in their patrol car in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
