    Joan Barr Smith, who served as Evanston's first female mayor, has died after a long battle with leukemia, city officials announced. She was 75. Mrs. Smith, who pushed back against the political influence of the city of Chicago as the last in a long line of Republican Evanston mayors, died Saturday, March 21. Mrs. Smith served on the Evanston City Council from 1977 to 1985 before being elected mayor, a job she held for two terms until she decided not to seek re-election in 1993.
