    A native of High Point, he was the son of the late Archie Alva and Helen Snider Koonts. Ronald received the Moorehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and later earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree and Master of Theology degree from Duke University.

    Audrey Lee Hawkins Gowing died peacefully May 8, 2015, in Chapel Hill at the age of 93 following a long struggle with dementia and a brief physical illness. She was born Oct. 4, 1921, in Fines Creek, and grew up in Canton, the only daughter and first child of William Taylor and Bessie Lee Silver Hawkins.
