The weight loss empire announced the death of Jean Nidetch - who came up with a system for losing weight gradually with the help of a group of friends in 1963. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1923, Ms Nidetch tried and failed throughout her early life to keep her weight under control - and years of binge-eating and fad diets left her weighing more than 200lbs before her 40th birthday.

    Harvey Miller, a leader in bankruptcy law, dies at 82

    Harvey Miller, a partner in the New York-based law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP who helped create bankruptcy as a practice specialty and represented Lehman Brothers Holdings in the biggest collapse in U.S. history, died April 27 at his home in Manhattan. He was 82. A spokeswoman for the firm confirmed the death and said the cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
