Ronald Hermance Jr., a graduate of St. John Fisher College and head of Hudson City Bancorp Inc. as it awaits federal approval of its acquisition by M&T Bank Corp., died Thursday from leukemia. A native of Batavia, Genesee County, Mr. Hermance was chairman, president and CEO of the Paramus, N.J.-based holding company and wholly owned subsidiary Hudson City Savings Bank for nine years. Known as Ron, he was born in Batavia, N.Y., on July 16, 1947 to Ronald Edmund Hermance, Sr. and Claire Marshall Hermance. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Batavia and Saint John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. He began his banking career in Western New York with Bankers Trust Company, then Goldome in Buffalo and Southold Savings Bank in Southold, N.Y., before starting with Hudson City Savings Bank of Paramus in 1988.
