    Fire kills mom, two kids

    A mother and two of her children died Saturday when a fire destroyed a 21/2-story wood frame home at 1814 11th Ave. The victims include Jessica Giarth, 31, and her children, Kea Barnes, 9, and Lyric Giarth, 20 months, said Blair County Coroner Patricia Ross. Barnes was found dead inside the house, while the Giarths were taken out but were pronounced dead at UPMC Altoona.

    Ex-Altoona standout dies

    Altoona native Anthony C. "Tony" Georgiana of Newark, DE, passed away Dec. 24. Elected to the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, he was 93. "I never saw him play," said nephew Jim Georgiana of Hollidaysburg, "but my dad said he was one heck of an athlete. He was an outstanding running back in football, and they said he could hit a baseball a mile."
