    Washington-area obituaries of note

    Joseph H. Melrose Jr., 69, a State Department officer who retired in 2001 after serving as ambassador to Sierra Leone, where he played a role in achieving a peace accord to end a long-running civil war, died Nov. 8 at a hospital in Allentown, Pa. The cause was complications from a fall in Collegeville, Pa., said a son, Andrew Melrose.

    Woman dies week after husband shoots her, himself

    A 92-year-old Allentown woman has died almost a week after officials say she was shot by her husband. She was shot Nov. 21 at the couple's home in the 1600 block of East Washington Street by her longtime husband, 92-year-old Izak Waide.

    A 92-year-old Alzheimer's disease victim died six days after being shot in the head by her husband, Allentown police report. Malka Waide died Thursday in a hospice in Northampton County, Assistant Chief George Medero and Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim confirmed.

Frances worked as a secretary for General Motors in North Tarrytown and later was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, art and painting.
