Alameda: Longtime butcher Joe Scalise dies at 80

Joe Scalise has died, a man whose friendliness, hard work and commitment to quality helped make his family butcher shop an Alameda institution for more than three-quarters of a century. Known by legions of loyal customers as "Joe the Butcher," Scalise passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 19. He was 80. Joe Scalise learned about sausages, steaks and other cuts of meat from his father, "Papa Joe," who opened the original Joe Scalise & Sons Butcher Shop at Chestnut Street and Encinal Avenue in 1935, just a year after Joe was born.
