Princeton has given us Michelle Obozo, Sonia Sotomanure and now Jon Stewart as the most trusted JOURNALIST???

Look, describing this guy as a comic was a stretch.

This is an era where the ethics of journalism have flown out the window. How about you cite the ways in shich Steward cannot be trusted? Regardless of whether you agree/disagree, in what way has he usurped ethical journalism?

You first, cite the ways in which he CAN be trusted.

You admit ethics have flown out the window yet Stewart of all people gets an exemption ? That's rich.

Right you are, Al. But Stewart grew up in Lawrenceville, a couple of miles away, and was the invited speaker at the graduation Class Day exercises.

Princeton pleaded for his presence.

Did he try to impart wisdom? Or tell some lame jokes in his self-impressed style? Or did he just insult people and think it clever?

Hmmmm. Those are pretty much all the same in the Ivy League these days.

I'm impressed with your ability to use elementary school name calling as a substitute for that which you don't like or understand. Inserting "bozo" and "manure" is sheer genius! My you must be proud of yourself.

Oh, and I don't know how you missed this in your obviously well read background, but, what Jon Stewart does is called "satire", not comedy. It has a long and distinguished history in political dialogue.

And, as others have pointed out, Mr. Stewart did not matriculate at Princeton. His post secondary degree is from the College of William and Mary.

Say, since you are so cavalier about the quality of American university education, where did you study? It must have been somewhere much more impressive than Princeton. Am I right?

Gets to you when your heroes have to take what they sling, right Brian?

Franken invented that excuse for ridicule and name-calling, hiding behind "satire" whenever he was called on it. Worked for him. Now he votes on YOUR heathcare. Remember the Franken book title "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Jerk"??? I guess you could call it plagiarism but it has inspired my own approach to civil dialogue.

"Satire" is what your agent calls comedy when it doesn't get a laugh.

Do you rip into all those people with the Bush and Cheney remarks, and cute word play, with the same fervor?

The school I went to, like so many others, no longer exists. It died with "affirmative action".

Typical loser right wing lack of accountability response. "Franken did it!"
First of all, you are hardly in Franken's league. Second, even if he did rely on puerile name calling, that wouldn't excuse you. Did you ever get pulled over for speeding and tell the cop "Waaaaa... someone else was speeding, so its okay if I do!!!"

Oh, and fyi, the NYT best selling book written by Senator Franken (Rush doesn't write his own "books") is "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat IDIOT" not jerk. I guess that means you haven't read it. So, its awfully ignorant of you to comment on it.

You know, Brian, I knew you would take that bait.
You're certainly compulsive about accuracy when it concerns your hero's name calling.
And no, I haven't read it. You, obviously, couldn't put it down when you saw the title.

The poll has got to be bogus, Flimblow or Mannity didn't even get Honorable Mention. In a related story FOX conducted their own poll and declared Rush more popular than God and Sean more popular than Jesus.

What was your "bait" genius? You'd write something ignorant and then wait for someone to point out how ignorant it was? You are a clever, clever boy. Good for you.

A satirist is most effective when no overly puffed up target, regardless of the satirist's beliefs, is too sacred to have their balloons popped with a deft pinprick.

A polemicist, by contrast (which Al Franken became when he ceased being funny, deciding we should "take him seriously") and which Michael Moore began as) may act like a satirist - but his primary targets are always his enemies (political or otherwise), even if takes a few light swipes at his own side, e.g., to affect a modicum of "fairness."

Parker and Trey of South Park are the closest we have to true satirists working on TV today and are nearly truly equal opportunity eviscerators.

Whereas by now pretty much 100% of the Steven Colbert material and at least 70-80% of the Daily Show's are turned primarily against those of the right-leaning persuasion.

By the same token, Op-Ed people by and large are pretty useless gauges of accuracy since the great majority will never bite the side that feeds them, and will defend their friends often to the bitter end.

Among the rare exceptions on the left are the articulate and sharp-fanged Christopher Hitchens and Camille Paglia who are upfront about their leftist views, but totally unafraid to rip into pompous or unethical co-travelers. On the right, few conservatives are actually funny (P.J. O'Rourke being an exception), but George Will is known for taking his own cohort to task.

Note: Polemicists ply their wares in many varietals, some of which in no way in no way resemble satire or comedy.

Very interesting post!:)
Thanks!

I get tired quickly when these forum discussions turn into exchanges of snarky talking points and insults.

Don't you?

Especially when the underlying issues are more interesting when examined and discussed rather than debated in flame wars.
