Toronto Maple Leafs Rumour Mill Turns to Dustin Penner
Toronto being the hockey city of the world, but the Maple Leafs are the rumour capital of the NHL. As there has been no shortage of Toronto Maple Leafs trade rumours since the New Year began.
The newest Maple Leafs rumour comes from Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Star. Mitchell has reported that,
“if Brian Burke is looking at a rental player to give the Maple Leafs an edge in their stretch drive, the club could take a chance with Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Penner.”
The obvious interest in Penner is the fact that he is 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, a big body scorer that Brian Burke absolutely covets. There is also a familiarity between Burke and Penner from the 2006/07 Stanley Cup Anaheim Ducks.
The Penner experiment with the Los Angeles has certainly failed (7 goals and 12 assist in 62 games), since coming over in a trade from the Edmonton Oilers that saw prospect Colten Teubert, a 2011 first round draft pick and a conditional third round pick in 2012.
The Manitoba native could make his way to Toronto if the Kings want to get rid of the $4.25 million the Kings still owe him at the end of this season, so that they can make other moves.
One aspect that could prevent Penner coming to Toronto is the asking price. The Kings gave up a prospect and two draft picks including a 1st round pick and L.A. would want recoup some of their losses.
Penner is a former 32 goal scorer and has also recorded 20 plus goals in three other seasons. If Brian Burke is unable to acquire a star player, than I only want Penner coming to Toronto for the same kind of deal that brought Matthew Lombadri in the off-season. If the Kings are looking to dump this guy, than no need to send back a 1st round pick or any high end prospects.

Toronto Maple Leafs head out to Calgary for a 3 game Western Road Trip
The Toronto Maple Leafs start on a 3 game western Canadian road trip where they will face the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, February 14. Then 49 hours later the Maple Leafs play against the Edmonton Oilers. Then finish off the road trip by facing the Vancouver Canucks Saturday evening on Hockey Night in Canada, before heading back to the Air Canada Center for a four game home stand.
vs Calgary Flames – Following three disappointing straight losses for Maple Leafs, the buds are in need of a dire win, in order to get the team back on track. The Flames have been playing .500 hockey over their last eight games. Maple Leafs and Flames have only faced each other once this season, where the Maple Leafs came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. This game should be a tremendous battle, as both the Leafs and Flames are in a tight battle just to make the playoffs.
vs Edmonton Oilers – The next game is in Edmonton, to face the Oilers. Over the last eight games the Oilers are 5-3, and have scored 27 goals. The Maple Leafs recently played the Oilers earlier this month where the Maple Leafs scored 6 goals and Phil Kessel recorded 2 goals and 1 assists. In my opinion this is a must win game for the Maple Leafs. It was unfortunate to lose against a below .500 team in the Montreal Canadiens, but you have to seal the deal with the Oilers.
vs Vancouver Canucks – The Canucks are currently ranked third in the NHL in points. The Canucks have recorded points in their last 9 games and are red hot. The Maple Leafs have only faced the Canucks once this season, where the Canucks won by the score of 5-3. This is one of those it would be nice to win games, but I do not expect the Maple Leafs to pull this one out.
