Lions Put Two Backs on Ir, Get Down to 53
The Detroit Lions have trimmed their roster to the mandated limit of 53, and the biggest news is that two running backs are on injured reserve.
Five things to watch in Lions exhibition
1. Health: The Lions don't need to lose another important contributor to injury in the exhibition finale at Buffalo, as they lost running back James Stewart (shoulder) in 2003 and quarterback Jeff Garcia (leg) in '05. Some key players might not play at all. 2. Daniel Bullocks: This is expected to be Bullocks' first game action since he suffered a torn ACL in an exhibition a year ago. If Bullocks returns to form, he will give the Lions another starter-caliber safety. 3. Punt return: Shaun McDonald returned the first punt last Saturday against Cleveland. A prelude to keeping only four wide receivers? If Devale Ellis gets an opportunity tonight, he needs to take advantage of it and give the coaches something to debate in their personnel meeting. 4. Drew Henson: He has been out of pro sports for a year. He has had less than a week to prepare. And now Henson, the two-sport phenom from Brighton, who has suited up for the Wolverines, the Yankees and Cowboys, is expected to take some snaps for the Lions. At the very least, it should add some intrigue to a game the Lions are otherwise just trying to get through. 5. Scoreboard: No, going 4-0 in the exhibition season for the first time since 1990 wouldn't mean anything. But how often do you get to say the Lions finished any kind of season undefeated?
