Latest snowfall puts Portland over the 100-inch mark
Friday's snowfall has put Portland above the 100-inch mark for the season.
The National Weather Service says that as of 7 a.m., the snow totals in Maine's largest city hit 100.7 inches. That figure is on the rise as snow is expected to continue through much of the day.
Jim Hayes of the weather service says snow totals in Portland for the winter of 2007-2008 now rank 15th-highest since officials began keeping records back in 1881-1882. But at this late date, there's little chance of shattering the all-time high of 141.5 inches, set in 1970-71. Read more

Ark. floods to linger for weeks; new levee 'sand boils' found
“We don't know what the Mississippi is going to do yet”
Arkansans sandbagged their front doors and pumped out their flooded basements Wednesday as a historic crest on the White River moved downstream, threatening to raise a days-long stand of water even higher.
Residents and county officials along the river's path in east-central Arkansas anxiously tended to their property, worried that the river flows would hit an already swollen Mississippi River on the state's eastern border and flow back into their cotton and wheat fields.
'I don't think anybody knows how much higher it's going to get,' said Monroe County resident Marlin Reeves as overcast skies threatened rain. Forecasters predict a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms hitting the Arkansas prairie by Friday. Read more

Even furry pets need shelter when the winter winds blow
Dear Abby: I have seen several dogs and cats left outside in below-zero weather this winter. Yes, animals have fur to help them keep warm, but that doesn't mean they don't get cold (even in dog houses). People get cold staying outside for an extended amount of time, even when bundled up, so imagine how the animals feel. These innocent animals can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia just like humans.

Army begins using $150,000 artillery shells in Afghanistan
“Aside from the counter-measures, it flies to so quickly to a target that the chance of it being jammed is remote.”
- Canadian army gunners in Afghanistan are now cleared to fire GPS-guided artillery shells at Taliban militants - at the cost of $150,000 a round.
The Excalibur shell could very well be the most expensive conventional ammunition ever fired by the military.
Supporters argue that the weapon, which has the ability to correct itself in flight, has pinpoint accuracy. They predict that will cut down on the mounting civilian death toll from air strikes in a war-torn region, where insurgents often hide among the population. Read more
