The Nation's Weather

Rain clouds stretched from North Dakota to Texas early Monday, while storms also made for a wet commute in the Northwest. The Northeast was to stay cool.

Low pressure will sweep through the central portion of the country and toward the Mississippi Valley, pulling a tremendous amount of Gulf of Mexico moisture northward into the eastern Plains and eventually into the Southeast.

This moisture could produce areas of heavy rain along with thunderstorms from the Gulf Coast through the Upper Midwest.

Algerian officials: Baby found alive after floods

A baby was found alive by rescuers after spending four days in a pool of mud following flash floods that killed at least 41 people in central Algeria this week, a local official said Sunday.

'It's a miracle, really a miracle to find it alive after all this time,' the town governor of Ghardaia, Yahia Fahim, told national radio. The state-run APS news agency said the 4-month-old baby appeared in good health after being discovered late Saturday and had been handed to a family while authorities looked for its parents.

AP Investigation: Ike environmental toll apparent

Hurricane Ike's winds and massive waves destroyed oil platforms, tossed storage tanks and punctured pipelines. The environmental damage only now is becoming apparent: At least a half million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and the marshes, bayous and bays of Louisiana and Texas, according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.

In the days before and after the deadly storm, companies and residents reported at least 448 releases of oil, gasoline and dozens of other substances into the air and water and onto the ground in Louisiana and Texas. The hardest hit places were industrial centers near Houston and Port Arthur, Texas, as well as oil production facilities off Louisiana's coast, according to the AP's analysis.

Sheriff: National death toll from Ike climbs to 70

A Texas sheriff's official says the national death toll from Hurricane Ike has hit 70 after two bodies were found near where the storm came ashore.

A search team made the discovery Saturday on an island off the devastated resort area of Bolivar Peninsula.

The bodies were taken to the Galveston County medical examiner's office. Sheriff's Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo (too-leh-MAHN'-doe) says he has no other information about the victims.

Ike forced more than a million people to flee the Texas coast before it hit Sept. 13. It caused flooding and deaths as far away as Pennsylvania.
