It is the oil companies that are gouging the American public, they are bringing down our economy and our nation. I would love to see all American citizens boycott all political rallies and elections until our bought and paid for do nothing senators, congressmen and our president do something that benefits the taxpayers and not themselfs.

Hugo sells Venezuelan gas to his countrymen for $.17 per gallon, the CIA has tried to kill him twice, what's wrong with this picture? More drilling is not the answer, Stop the GREED and let's REALLY work hard to find a viable alternative. But will the oil companies let this happen? The answer is NO, because they are the ones in power!

I hardly think the prices are gouging, at least not yet, demand is down in the USA, unfortunately everyone that drives needs fuel and most vehicles run on gasoline. The oil companies only make 8 cents on a dollar profit on gas sales, hardly a super return, but a good one, where does the rest of that dollar go a good portion to taxes and the rest to the oil and refining it to gas. If the oil price goes up more of a dollar of gas has to go to the oil and less can go to refinement, and we still have to pay the taxes and the company still needs to make money for its shareholders. To compound that the dollar is losing value. But in a country where the poor have cars, and big screen TVs maybe we need to tighten our belts a little more and not have all of our extras. Although I do agree with ByeBye that I wish are do nothing politicians would do something to benefit the public and not just themselves.

ByeBye and Ross: I agree
100% with you!

Our government does absolutely
nothing for the people. They
are all for big Corporations!

To Alex: Tighten our belts???
How would you like to pay $560.84 for 150 gallons of
home heating oil??? That was
our last oil bill.

The major Corporations get richer, the rich get richer
and the poor working class
America gets poorer....

Alex, if the oil companies are not gouging how do you explain the billions of dollars they are making each month while the American people are having such a hard time buying gas and heating oil.
They are gouging us and you don't even know it.

We should question the amount of taxes government is already taking from the consumer. Connecticut has the highest gasoline tax in the country.

http://www.icpa.org/consumer_motor.htm

The new tax was placed on distributors becuase our state legislature did not have the guts to call it a gasoline tax. The money was to pay for our historical transportation bill that was supposed to revolutionize Connecticut. Gov. Jodi Rell simply asked for a one penny gas tax. The Democrats in the State Legislature decided that was not enough and initated the GRT which is a rising percentage of the wholesale price. That was when gas was selling at $1.75 per gallon. The next time you see your Democtatic State legislator or Democratic State Senator, ask them how much money the State has collected on this tax. I can assure you it's already more than what was needed to pay for the transportation bill. Shame on the Democrats for misleading the public and using Exxon as the scapegoat to scalp consumers.

Too much common sense in this Editorial.

I'd like to add, the government profits far more than oil companies from the sale of petroleum. Where's the outrage over that?

Look at Exxon's net profit and compare it to how much they have to spend just to keep the oil flowing. Exxon is going to spend 21 billion dollars for further exploration. They also have investments in LNG Facilities.

How Enron Worked the President!

(This is an interesting bit of information that you don't hear much about.)

1. Enron's chairman did meet with the president and the vice president in the Oval Office.
2. Enron gave $420,000 to the president's party over three years.
3. It donated $100,000 to the president's inauguration festivities.
4. The Enron chairman stayed at the White House 11 times.
5. The corporation had access to the administration at its highest level and even enlisted the Commerce and State Departments to grease deals for it.
6. The taxpayer-supported Export-Import Bank subsidized Enron for more than $600 million in just one transaction.
Scandalous!!

(Look below .....)

BUT...the president under whom all this happened WASN'T George W. Bush.

SURPRISE!

It was President Bill Clinton!

ARE WE REALLY READY FOR MRS. CLINTON?

I think it is time to regulate the oil companies and all the other utilities. This deregulation has been a flop.

We need to amend the regulation to allow for generation. At present, third party suppliers can sell natural gas and electricity. The utilities have to purchase their power on the open market and sell it back to consumers. Without the ability to generate, they are handcuffed.

Maybe taxing isn't the answer, what is to prevent Exxon from making good decisions in the future and making "excess profits" by producing a high quality product that people want? Maybe all our money should just go straight to the government, and our elected officials would decide how much we get back. Much like the current income tax situation every April, except the "tax return" (ie, the money the government took on top of what they think you ought to pay, and then held for you without giving any interest) would be the entire salary you would make in a year.

Then we could do the same for companies. Then these greedy companies with foresight and quality products wouldn't be making excess profits at the expense of small companies designing and distributing garbage.

I agree all money should go to the Government an let them pay us rather than a receive a pay check from these greedy corporations. Or better yet everyone quite working for them an any other greedy company out there. We'll show them.
Another way that will bankrupt them is we'll not buy Gasoline, Electric, Water or Gas.
Don't forget the greedy Grocery Store's Boycot them also.

Down with big Business or any business that makes money. We don't need them.

I think we should tax oil speculators. Short-tem Speculators are harming our entire economy. I have no desire to apply a penalty tax to long-term holders of oil stock.

The USA should tell the oil producers that the price of a barrel of oil will be $75 we will have to ration fuel for several months, sell the petroleum reserves at $75 only for domestic use. The USA will then begin drilling for oil in ANWR all money to be used to develop alternative fuels. Oil will no longer be exported to other countries, our troops would be redeployed in our nation and we would start manufacturing products at home. This would drive the price of fuel way down since the Chinese would no loger need fuel because their economy would be in the tank. Wake up America before the robber barrons of our times turn this once mighty industrial giant into a third world nation.

Next time you pay high prices at the gas pump to fill up your gas tank to your car, take time out to thank the Liberals and the Sierra Club.

In the 1960's when the liberals started their 'Save the World' mantra and esp. the 1970's & 80's when they would file law suits against anyone attempting to drill for oil in the U.S.A. we have been increasingly dependent on foreign oil.

Their front page introduction to their organization sounds like a nazi advertisement for recruits.

'...The Sierra Club's members and supporters are more than 1.3 million of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization...'

Sounds so sweet, but they are so divisive and run the 'Club' like a Nazi Death Camp.

Thanks Liberals for your foresight in pushing gasoline prices so high that it nearly breaks us when we fill up !
