Full story: www.washingtonpost.com

Several D.C. Council members said the Catholic Church is trying to erode the city's long-standing laws protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination.

So they are threatening to stop any civil services? Oh, what a shame. These services will probably be better served by secular groups anyhow. Screw the churches "ultimatum". Let it backfire in their bigoted faces.

So......the Catholic Church is using threats to try and get it's way........how original is that?

If the Church can't abide by the laws......then maybe they shouldn't be taking the City's funds.

DC has had nondiscrimination law that includes sexual orientation and gender identity for years now yet the church all of a sudden says they can't support a government that has such laws? Just because they are extending the nondiscrimination principle to the special rights that heterosexuals receive when they marry?

The leadership of this archdiocese is obviously desperate. They are losing their undeserved influence in our government and are trying some kind of "hail mary" strategy (haha, pun intended!) to spend their last shred of political power so they can continue to push their beliefs on everyone else. This is a desperate measure on their part and will harm them badly when they lose.

Actually the Catholic church contributes quite a bit and usually without advertisement or acknowledgment. If they retract their aid it will be a great loss and they know it. Otherwise they wouldn't have used it as an ultimatum.
I find it quite sad however that the church would dangle the welfare of thousands of homeless people on an issue that is completely unrelated to the people they suppose to be helping.
A final note, If the church chooses not to open it's building's to ALL community organizations, then it shouldn't be receiving money from the tax payers it's discriminating against.

Nobody elected them to anything, if they won't stay out of politics, they should lose their tax exemption and be made to register as a lobby. And of course they reveal their utter hypocrisy: clearly they prefer to scold than help, and most important to them is their own power. But we already knew that by the way they aided and abetted the child molesters in their ranks while doing their utmost to intimidate the victims, their families, and the civil authorities trying to investigate. Anybody wants to believe what they sell theologically, fine, but screw their notions of creating a theocracy. Push them back behind the limit separating church and state if they won't honor it on their own.

I just don't understand why Congress doesn't GET IT and finally -- FINALLY - remove ALL religious institutions of their tax exempt status. All of the churches have gotten into politics over the last 10 years -- and never more obvious than in their denial of our EQUAL RIGHTS !! They continue their dogmatic stance to throw us under the bus.

I agree: SCREW THE CHURCH and their CULT

I find it absolutely amazing that they call themselves Christians and they want to leave women and children out in the cold. That is hypocrisy at its best!

Why on earth would you give up helping people to hurt another group of people?

I agree with other statements posted, if the Church and all the other denominations want to play in the field of civil law then off with their tax exempt status!!!!

Catholic Charities in DC is a drop in the bucket of services to anyone. Other organizations, I'm sure, will be more than happy to take up the slack when the church finally pulls its contracts with the city.

For me, whatever. If they want to give ultimata like this one, tax them, they're lobbying. If they want their special right not to be taxed, the can STFU!

Maybe we need to do a referendum on removing the tax exempt status of churches...

All the DC council needs to do is call their bluff.

The Catholic church never turns away money. If they do this time there will be other, non discriminatory, charities waiting in line on the city hall steps to apply for the additional funds.

The standoff appears to be among the harshest between a government and a faith-based group over the rights of same-sex couples. Advocates for same-sex couples said they could not immediately think of other places where a same-sex marriage law had set off a break with a major faith-based provider of social services.
The only thing unprecedented here is the scope of services being abandoned. This is exactly what Catholic Charities did in Massachusetts: After quietly placing children in same-sex households [when it was in the best interest of the child, even given their narrow point of view], it suddenly became impossible for them to continue their adoption services in a state that recognized those prospective parents as "married."

Their little tantrum has played quite well in the "we Christians are SOOO discriminated against" circuit, so now they're upping the ante. The want to be able to stomp around the country showing how gays who want to marry have forced them to abandon their entire array of social services.

Why those evil homosexuals are the very cause of homelessness and hunger....

Perhaps it is well to remember that the Supreme Court of the US of A is not 6 to 9 Roman Catholic. In spite of wishful thinking that men in nice dresses will lose in the end, they have managed a total coupe of the court system.

Best not count the cracked rosary beads just yet:(
