Money fueling battle over gay marriage

Full story: www.bangordailynews.com

With a week and a half to go before Election Day, the two campaigns in the battle over gay marriage continue to haul in large sums of money from donors both inside and outside of Maine. The organization defending Maine’s same-sex marriage law continues to hold a sizable financial edge over the law’s detractors, although the gap has narrowed in recent weeks. No on 1-Protect Maine Equality has raised more than $4 million so far — including about $1.4 million since Oct. 1 — for its campaign to make Maine the first state in the nation where voters have endorsed same-sex marriages. The group working to repeal Maine’s gay marriage law, Stand for Marriage Maine, more than doubled its war chest in three weeks by raising roughly $1.4 million in October. Stand for Marriage Maine has raised a total of $2.6 million, according to reports filed Friday with the Maine Ethics Commission.

you can listen to NPR coverage of Question 1 on the webpage link provided above by the poster.

The NPR report covers other topics, but the discussion on Question 1 begins at 23:20 into it, so you might want to fast forward to that point. It's about 15 minutes in length.

It is a a dam shame that the church and the gay haters of Maine have spent over a million dollars to repeal a law that makes gay people equal in terms of taxes. We have thousands of unemployed workers in this state and homeless poor people children in every area of the state people need health care housing jobs food new schools this money could have gone to better causes. I guess hate is more important than human suffering.America is going to hell to burn!

The catholic church spends millions on political issues such as gay equality and abortion rights yet they are closing hundreds of parishes in Maine and elsewhere.
It is clear they are primarily a political organization and not a religions one.

Approximately 80 million dollars were spent on Prop 8 in a state with almost 37 million residents. That amounts to approximately one dollar spent by each side on each resident. There were 17 million voters registered prior to the 2008 Presidential election. That means each side spent $2.50 for each potential vote.

By contrast, Maine has 1.3 million residents. The 6.6 million dollars reported so far amounts to $2.50 for each resident. Over 700 thousand voted in the 2008 Presidential election.(I'm not sure how many were registered.) So each side has already spent almost $5 per potential vote, and the total is sure to climb much higher in the last two weeks of this battle.

Can there be any doubt that most of the noise and most of the money comes out-of-state?
