ACLU, HRC At Odds Over Senate Version of Hate Crimes Bill - Lez Get Real

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Campaign are apparently at odds over the Matthew Shepard Act, which was attached to the Defense Reauthorization Bill. According to several sources, the ACLU is objecting to the bill on the grounds that it may impact freedom of speech. On 17 July, an ACLU spokesperson issued a statement objecting to the Senate version of the hate crimes bill because it lacked strong language protecting freedom of speech. This, of course, recalls the various objections that many Conservative groups have to the hate crimes bill.

And who says the ACLU is some liberal lapdog? This should be evidence the organization really does pursue according to its own principals- to protect civil liberties and individual rights. Bravo! I'd rather see the bill fail than have it passed as an unconstitutional law. It's one thing to punish violent offenders based on motive and crime, while entirely another situation to punish folks based on their personal belief- which is the last thing I'd ever want to see happen because of LGBT inclusive legislation. HRC needs to get off its high horse.

aclu is a hack group..the hate crime bill clearly states that a hate crime is based on actions and NOT speech..period..end of conversation...
