KENYA: Muslim clerics declare war on condoms

Muslim leaders in Kenya's North Eastern Province have resolved to campaign against the promotion of condoms as a means of preventing HIV.

The decision was made after a recent meeting on the theme of "Islam and Health", attended by more than 60 Muslim scholars and teachers in the provincial capital of Garissa.

"A lot of money is being wasted to poison our community ... a huge amount of money is spent on buying condoms, buying immorality," Sheikh Mohamud Ali, of Garissa district, told IRIN/PlusNews.

Looks like a win-win to me. They get happy and we get less religious crazies to have to deal with.

And that was before I read this genius' opinion...

Abdi Welli, a taxi driver in Garissa, told IRIN/PlusNews he agreed with the clerics that condoms should be banned. He believed the widespread myth that condoms and contraceptives were laced with the HI virus. "We know the condoms are not safe ... if you want to contract the virus that causes AIDS, then use [a condom]," he said. "After all, we have heard in the past that the Western world is using the condom to eliminate Africans, and Muslims in particular."

They are killing their families because they won't wear condoms...sick! If the men had put condoms on years ago, the AIDS epidemic would have been contained by now.

The African continent has the largest HIV crisis on the planet and some people there actually believe that condoms give you HIV and clerics believe condoms are bad.

That is sheer madness.

These clerics are killing their own people. May Allah forgive them.

We can't push our morality on them, fine. We should also stop pushing our medicine, and our money on them as well. They can live their lives however they want. Just don't ask for my contribution when they start to die left and right from HIV/AIDS. Then they can pray and fast until their hearts content.

We can't push anything on them. Uneducated Third World Mentality is what keeps people that way.(I know, not PC, but hey, facts are there)
Off topic, but this is why we will never succeed in a place like Iraq and Afghanistan. Granted, we rebuilt Japan and Germany, but they were industrialized, educated and had infrastructure. When you have third world education (and lack thereof) and the over abundance of customs, urban legends and religious zealots that want to keep the masses dumb so they will follow them....you will only have failure.

If they want to do this to themselves, so be it. Unfortunately, thousands of innocent women and their newborns suffer too. No one wins.

I believe KENYA or near there is where women are abused in a way that prevents them from having sexual enjoyment.

This is a part of the World where there is starvation, and the more kids in one family, the more people to starve. I do understand the thinking of making more carbon units means more to work the fields when the life expectancy is so low but what fields do they have there?

This not wearing condoms because of Religion is crazy. The Catholic Church should hand condoms out next to the Holy Water because most people are going to have sex regardless if they ever get married or not.

Condoms help reduce the chance of unwanted pregnancy as well as help reduce chances of STD. At least most STD. I doubt a condom is going to help prevent a good case of the galloping crabs.

Horrible as HIV is, I'd find it difficult to mourn these willfully ignorant clerics.

Their wives and children are another matter entirely.

Islam needs as many Muslims as possible in Africa because the whole continent is becoming Christian. So clerics recognize the importance of numbers when they are at war with Christianity. Therefore, no more condoms.

Sure, Mark. But since they also can't afford the meds, they're going to make fewer Muslims rather than more.

Conspiracy theorists at their level best...when will Americans who are known to be one of the most ignorant lot in this world learn to look at the world from a larger perspective...how about understanding the deep impact that sex has on the muslim faith? Anyone here who knows something about the muslims apart from the hysterical lumping of all muslims as terrorists? Fears that are now evident in your democratic nominations...as a democracy, you are over 200 years old...the gains you have made so far were really painful and slow...yet you dare point fingers at other nations...

Back to the issue at hand...Kenya is a predominantly Christian nation...North Eastern Province is just one of the 8 provinces that make up Kenya. North Eastern is mainly made of communities that broke away from Somalia in the 1960s...the area is remote and is mainly muslim...the communities are very traditional and they like preserving their culture...condoms are a new thing to them and the HIV/AIDS rates are very low compared with Coast province (another mainly muslim territory BUT cosmopolitan in nature...Mombasa is its main city)....

The highly traditional communities in Kenya have a very low HIV/AIDS rate whereas in the urban areas, the HIV/AIDS rate has been considerably high especially amongst the low income groups. The national average rate is 5.0% down from 6.0%...this decrease is attributed to increased awareness of HIV/AIDS amongst the population through massive awareness campaigns by the Ministry of Health...more people are now using the condoms and follow the ABC's of HIV/AIDS control...this campaign is now moving to the rural areas hence this kind of opposition...obviously this is not something you guys know about...i mean all your information comes from the media within the confines of your living rooms...travel and learn.

Well said my friend.... protected sex should be understood that it is the "democratic" way of introducing and encouraging sex to kids and those who wont have sex for cultural or religious reasons. Multiplying children without proper family values is against most religious and cultural beliefs. People are made to believe condoms and contraceptives are a good protection. At the same token, it has been proven that condoms and contraceptives are NOT a 100% protection and that sometimes they fail you. The only 100% solution is not to abuse family values. Condoms are a new thing in the african culture. We are faithful to our partners and thats all that matters. And then came along democracy.....and freedom for our kids...now they are not our kids anymore...governments and "democracy" owns our kids....and then introduce them to condoms?? Most people in their right mind wouldn't be happy to have their daughters bring them kids from a stray bullet..

Most probably you:

1. Lack a college education

2. Get ALL your semblance of news from your living room

3. Continue to think that OBAMA is muslim while at the same time hold him accountable for Wright's comments...make up your mind ...CHRISTIAN OR MUSLIM?

4. You represent THE American population that is deeply ignorant and very prejudicial...thank God your likes are greatly outnumbered..

In other words i give a rat's ar** to your comments...get some education first and then we can talk...

AND YES...i am in KENYA...www.magicalkenya.com

Well you say as joke that we should fast and pray, but we are actually happy to be doing just that. Aids has being affecting most parts of African but if you look at statistics the rate HIV infection is low in North Easter, why? because of high standards of morality and the same could advocated for the rest instead of encouraging promiscuity. We to encourage purity and self repect which our religion does and all the other religions for that matter.
