Power out after electrical manhole cover blown off by explosion in West Molesey

Mourners have gathered for the funeral of Bianka O'Brien and her one-year-old son, Jude, killed in a building explosion and fire in Rozelle, Sydney a fortnight ago. In a statement released shortly after the death of his wife and son, John O'Brien said Bianka was the love of his life and that Jude was the perfect child.

Worker critically injured in Boyle Heights propane explosion

BOYLE HEIGHTS >> A worker delivering propane to an industrial customer in Boyle Heights today was critically burned in a “flashover” explosion. Paramedics sent to Ekco Metals in the 1700 block South Perrino Place about 11:50 a.m. took the man to a hospital with burns over most of his body, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Marine killed by grenade explosion

One Marine Corps recruit was killed and two others were injured on Tuesday when a hand grenade exploded during a training session in the southeastern port city of Pohang, military officials said. The accident took place at around 10:20 a.m. at the drill camp of the South Korean Marine Corps when a hand grenade suddenly exploded, severing the hand of one Marine recruit with shrapnel while wounding another recruit and one instructor, they said.

Roadside bomb kills 6 policemen in Egypt's Sinai

A powerful explosion killed five Egyptian police conscripts and an officer near the border town of Rafah in the restive Sinai Peninsula early Tuesday, in an attack that bore the hallmarks of a local al-Qaida-inspired group, Egyptian security officials said. The Interior Ministry and a security official said the bomb was hidden deep under the asphalt of a highway, in an area called Wadi Halfa, where a joint police and army force was passing early in the morning.

Lava flows from Philippine volcano, thousands flee

The Philippines' most active volcano belched out huge lava fragments that rolled about a kilometer down its slope in an ongoing gentle eruption, prompting authorities to evacuate thousands of villagers, officials said Tuesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Mount Mayon, warning that a "hazardous eruption" is possible within weeks.

Athens man charged with arson following meth lab explosion

An Athens man faces drug charges as well as a count of arson following the explosion of a meth lab. The charges stem from a fire at the home of Carter's parents on the 100 block of Suffield Street on Aug. 21. Investigators said Carter had a meth lab in operation when it blew up, starting a fire.

Police officials say the first attack happened Monday afternoon when a roadside bomb explosion hit a patrol of anti-militant fighters, known as Sahwa, in the town of Madain, just south of Baghdad, killing three fighters and one civilian. The Sahwa are made up of Sunni militiamen who joined U.S. troops in the fight against al-Qaida during the height of Iraq's insurgency in 2007 and 2008.
