NSU Demons face pivotal time in season
HAMMOND -- Matchups against two old rivals, at Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night and against McNeese Monday night at 7 in Prather Coliseum, will be pivotal to the chances of the Northwestern State Demons basketball team capturing at least a Southland Conference East Division title. The Demons (14-10 overall, 7-3 in the Southland with six league games left) are aiming for season sweeps over both teams. NSU beat Southeastern two weeks ago 55-38 in Prather Coliseum, while the Demons blew a comfortable lead in Lake Charles Jan. 21 and rallied from six points down in the final four minutes to edge the Cowboys 64-61 on Shamir Davis' buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Northwestern is among five teams with seven league wins trailing unbeaten Texas-Arlington (10-0) in the Southland race with 16 games to go. The Demons get to the final quarter of the league race after Monday night's visit by McNeese. 'These next two games are going to be really important, not only in the standings but to see how our team responds after getting whipped at Lamar,' said 13th-year head coach Mike McConathy. 'Sometimes getting it handed to you can help. We got a reminder that we have to give exceptional effort and be tough as nails.' Tipoff Saturday at SLU's University Center is 6 p.m., with the Demons hoping to pick up their sixth win in seven games. Their five-game winning streak was derailed Wednesday night with an 85-66 defeat at Lamar. Southeastern is 8-14 overall and 2-8 in the league with four straight defeats, but owns an 8-3 record at home. NSU is 5-8 overall on the road, including a 3-2 league mark. NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State will attempt to snap out of its recent slump when the Lady Demons host Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. today in Prather Coliseum in Southland Conference women's basketball action. The game is the first of two Play 4Kay, formerly Pink Zone, games for the Lady Demons and the day is also the Lady Demon reunion where two former greats -- Joskeen Garner and Angela Simpson -- will be inducted into the Graduate N Club Hall of Fame in a postgame ceremony. The Lady Demons (5-18, 1-9 SLC) have dropped their last six games and nine out of 10 and are coming off an 82-61 loss to Lamar on Wednesday in their last outing. Southeastern Louisiana (8-14, 3-6) has won three of four including a 73-66 win over the Lady Demons in Hammond on Jan. 28. The Lady Lions defeated Texas-San Antonio 64-63 on Wednesday. Jordi James continues to top the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game followed by Trudy Armstead at 13.0 ppg and Jasmine Upchurch with a 12.0 average. SLU is led in scoring by sophomore forward Aja Gibson's 12 points a game. Gibson was the driving force in her team's win over the Lady Demons two weeks ago when she had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
