Kent State volleyball team continues solid start to 2014 season

The Kent State volleyball team completed its third consecutive winning weekend to start the season by defeating Montana 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineer Invitational, completing a 2-1 weekend.

Our poor friends from East Lansing came to Eugene once again to suffer a loss at the hands of the Ducks. In a somewhat tame environment at Matthew Knight friday night, the Ducks managed to weather a Spartan attack that took the first set to rally and take the final three.

Oregon might have a new defensive coordinator this season, but if anyone thought that Don Pellum would be that much different from Nick Aliotti, then maybe last Saturday's game against Michigan State eased those fears. Or rather, the second-half adjustments that Pellum made and how the Oregon defense responded in the final two quarters against Michigan State might have cleared the minds of those who were missing Aliotti.

Harrison deal plays out for Aces: Rookie winger Wolfe is the end-game

A year after the Alaska Aces granted center Zach Harrison's trade request, they finally got something in return: The ECHL rights to rookie winger Greg Wolfe, who last season captained Michigan State and led the Spartans in goals and points. To recap -- the Aces in September 2013 traded Harrison to Orlando for future considerations; coach Rob Murray held onto those "futures'' until June, when league rules mandated the trade must be completed; Orlando shipped the Aces the rights to center C.J. Severyn; the Aces in August shipped Severyn's rights to Fort Wayne; and today Fort Wayne traded Wolfe's rights to the Aces.

College basketball preview magazines have been hitting newsstands this throughout the month, and they're nowhere close to in agreement as to how Michigan State will fare this season. The Sporting News had the Spartans as runners-up, just behind Wisconsin, which is coming off of a Final Four appearance.

Michigan State linebacker Darien Harris sprinted through a gaping hole, untouched, and had a clean shot at Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota - but Mariota eluded him on the play of the game in Saturday's 46-27 Oregon win . The third-and-10 play ended with Mariota avoiding Ed Davis and Riley Bullough and flipping to Royce Freeman for 17 yards.
