Maryland is courting a signature early win
The pocket ace Maryland held throughout both its struggles last season and its strong finish was a November victory over a top five opponent. When Selection Sunday came, the Terrapins were on the figurative bubble, and although it never will be known how much their win over then-No. 5 Michigan State in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament helped them earn a No. 10 seed, the achievement certainly provided a considerable push.
So far this season, Maryland (5-2) stands without such a signature nonconference victory, and its final opportunity to claim one comes Sunday night, when the Terrapins will take on No. 3 Villanova (7-0) in the BB&T Classic at Verizon Center.

The circumstances surrounding Landon Milbourne's childhood dictated he learn how to cut hair. He grew up on the Eastern Shore where, as he said, 'there wasn't much around as far as a big city and a lot of people,' and his mother owned a hair salon. It took Milbourne time to realize he could perform the craft, but these days he serves as the resident barber of the Maryland men's basketball team.
In fact, nearly every member of the front court Milbourne leads gets his hair cut by the senior forward who always has found sustenance in his ability to adapt to his surroundings. When Maryland squares off against Chaminade on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational, Milbourne will jump for the tip and spend most of the game executing a role that would have seemed unimaginable to him three years earlier.
