Once again, Hackenberg was at his best when it mattered most. He threw for 230 of his 309 yards in the second half, and he completed two clutch passes to Eugene Lewis on the game-winning drive.

Future suddenly looks good for PSU
The Big Ten had a disastrous, humbling and telling weekend, with Michigan State losing at Oregon, Ohio State losing at home to Virginia Tech and Michigan getting humiliated at Notre Dame. Plus, Northwestern lost to Northern Illinois, Purdue got pounded by Central Michigan and both Nebraska and Iowa barely escaped against what should have been cupcakes.
Lions' ground attack still struggling
The Lions rushed for 106 yards on 31 carries Saturday against Akron, but those numbers are heavily skewed by four carries that resulted in 64 yards. The other 27 carries produced only 42 yards.

The former Wyoming Valley Conference star fell just two yards shy of his second consecutive 100-yard game, but he drew two pass interference penalties and caught three key passes when Penn State scored its second touchdown in the third quarter. For the second straight game, the senior in the middle had more than 10 tackles, finishing with 11 and a sack for the Nittany Lions defense that refused to bend when Akron's offense challenged the end zone.

Five things to look for in Penn State's home opener as James Franklin coaches his first game at Beaver Stadium against Akron. The only downside to last week's opening victory against Central Florida is that the running game fizzled and it took 47 passes to win.
