He knew what his son, Virginia running back Mikell Simpson, could achieve if provided the opportunity. But Culp also knew the reality of the depth chart, and that his son was stuck in the undefined territory between a running back and a wide receiver.
An injury to starting running back Cedric Peerman allowed Simpson to return to his natural position that night against Maryland, and he responded with 16 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns and 13 receptions for 152 yards. Simpson also leapt into the end zone for the winning score with 16 seconds left in an 18-17 Virginia victory.
