Turner, though not a standout, is a Rising Star
Evan Turner's statistics don't stand out because he plays on a winning team and isn't considered a team's savior. That's why 76ers coach Doug Collins said he was 'ecstatic' that Turner, in his second season, was named to the Rising Stars Challenge roster, which consists of rookies and second-year players. The game will take place during All-Star weekend on Feb. 24 in Orlando. The All-Star game will take place two days later. Turner was recognized because the Sixers are one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. He wasn't chosen last season as a rookie, even though he was the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. 'I learned last year just because you don't have the gidget-gadgets and they can throw this out on you doesn't mean you play basketball right or wrong,' Turner said. 'I just worry about trying to become a better basketball player and playing the game the right way.' Turner has done that. He was averaging 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season heading into the Sixers' game Wednesday against San Antonio. 'Evan has given up a lot of himself and his game to be a guy, like Lou [Williams] and Thad [Young], who comes off the bench for us,' Collins said. 'His numbers aren't going to be earth-shattering because he's playing on a winning team. ... For him to be recognized is very good for him, very good for our organization and just reaffirms my feeling about winning teams and winning players.' Turner was one of 18 players selected for the game. This year, rookies and sophomores will be mixed together, and the teams will be selected by TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal. In the past, the rookies played the second-year players. Minnesota's Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams, Phoenix forward Markieff Morris, who is a Philadelphia native, and Cleveland's Tristan Thompson and Kyrie Irving are among the rookies who made the team. The Clippers' Blake Griffin, Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins, Washington's John Wall and the Knicks' Landry Fields are among the sophomores. Andre Iguodala is the only Sixers player to make both the rookie and sophomore teams since 2000, when the game was expanded to include sophomores. It was just a rookie game from 1994 until then. As for the All-Star game, the Sixers are hoping that Iguodala is their first participant since 2006, when Allen Iverson went. Spencer Hawes was back for two games after missing 10 with an Achilles strain. He was back on the sidelines after it started bothering him again. Elton Brand, meanwhile, was back in the starting lineup after missing two games with a sprained thumb. Hawes had an MRI on Tuesday on his back and his heel to see if the two injuries are related. Hawes had a lower back strain earlier in the season. The results came back negative, but Collins didn't know how long Hawes might be out.
