the World of Extreme Happiness Begins Tonight at Goodman Theatre

Is it possible to change one's destiny? Goodman Theatre 's milestone 90th Anniversary Season begins with an "All-New Fall" of new works, starting with Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig 's The World of Extreme Happiness-a provocative exploration of a factory girl struggling to gain control over her life amid China's modern economic transformation. Directed by Eric Ting in a world-premiere co-production with Manhattan Theatre Club, the play was commissioned by South Coast Repertory and developed in workshop productions-first at the Goodman , then at London's National Theatre , where it was hailed as a "hard-hitting and bruisingly funny" "snappy theatrical insight into contemporary China" .

Funeral Turns 10

What I remember most is two deranged geekboys drumming on each other's helmets. There was so much to love about Arcade Fire in 2004, but the image of Richard Peed Parry and Will Butler frantically pounding each other's skulls during performances of "Neighborhood #2 " is the one that sticks with me above all else.

The Goodman hopes American audiences can relate to an all-Asian show

"The world of extreme happiness" is a literal translation of the Chinese term for "heaven." It is also the title of Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's new play, which opens at the Goodman Theatre on September 13. It's the story of Sunny, a girl from rural China who, as a newborn, was thrown into a pig slop bucket to die by parents who were disappointed she wasn't a boy.

Thirty Seconds to Mars at The Woodlands, 9/5/2014

Note: Sadly, due to Friday's traffic nightmare getting up to The Woodlands , photos from Thirty Seconds' set are unavailable. Donning a white robe, a golden crown and with his long locks chasing him around all night, Jared Leto looked more like the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar than the front man of an alternative rock group.

Twenty years ago people were watching "Forrest Gump" at the movie theatres, Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first black president, Kurt Cobain died, Hootie & the Blowfish was huge and people watched O.J.
