He knows the backers and the A-listers will follow. It's a position most directors would kill to be in but it does mean luck plays as big a role as design.

Maps to the Stars Actress Sarah Gadon Takes a Strong Stance on Selfies
Though you may not be aware of it, it's quite likely you've seen Sarah Gadon on-screen-likely more than once!-in the past few years. In addition to roles in this year's comic-book blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and British art-house drama Belle, Gadon has appeared in three recent David Cronenberg films-2011's A Dangerous Method and 2012's Cosmopolis -and will soon be appearing in a third, Maps to the Stars, which premiered at Cannes in May. No brooding heartthrob husbands in this one, though; Gadon plays Clarice Taggart, an "iconic movie star" who has been dead for some time and is now, as a ghost, haunting her daughter, portrayed in the film by Julianne Moore .

Strictly Come Dancing review: seriously, who are the 11 million people who enjoy this stuff?
There's a Radio 4 programme, presented by the smug moraliser Marcus Brigstocke, called I've Never Seen Star Wars, which gets famous people to do things they've never done before, like watch Star War s. I'm not famous, but before last night I'd never seen Strictly .

Armond White: Expats Abroad and at Home
Because that nosey question follows the socialite's class-based dismissal about "the Civil War and you all losing so badly," it's quite a zinger. Vagaries of American social history always preoccupy Stillman's characters.
11 great time travel movies
From Planet of the Apes, to television series Doctor Who, to this year's Tom Cruise flick Edge of Tomorrow, Hollywood seems to be gripped by time travel. Hawke says time is such a huge part of our lives, it's no wonder we're fascinated by it.
Old School 'Magic'
But, unlike 84-year-old Clint Eastwood, whose last several films have grown increasingly tedious and uneven, Allen has been enjoying a remarkable career renaissance for the past decade since he finally decided to leave New York City behind and expand his artistic palette to include some of the world's most glamorous locations, including Barcelona, Paris, London and Rome. The exhilarating results have also carried him along on the hottest box-office streak of his lengthy career, with "Midnight in Paris" and last year's "Blue Jasmine" two of his biggest hits ever.

'The Longest Week' Review: Plagued By First World Problems
Looking at Jason Bateman 's filmography over the past five years, there's a mix of comedies, ranging in quality and style, but he plays an everyman in just about all of them. It seems as if he hit his stride with Arrested Development , and he's been cast as the non-threatening, generally handsome but relatable, nice guy about to boil over ever since.

The French roast The eternal favourite
You wouldn't normally think of the French as the Punjabis of Europe. There is one respect, however, in which Punjabis and the French are perfectly aligned: their love of chicken.

Pleasant 'Moonlight' doesn't quite match Allen's previous heights
I have seen far worse Woody Allen films than "Magic in the Moonlight." It's a charming 1920s period piece, a comfort dessert to be served after 2013's more daring main course, "Blue Jasmine."

'Magic in the Moonlight' falls short of enchanting
A man of mixed reviews, Woody Allen adds to the less impressive portion of his repertoire with ' Magic in the Moonlight ,' a film of old Hollywood classic appeal but with an unoriginal sigh.

It is hard to believe summer is almost over, but as we look back on a season that gave us surprise hits and surprise misses the most interesting trend to emerge was how this summer's soundtracks were all about the past.
