What a difference it will make for our society and this group when they finally learn to put that money toward SAT tutoring, college tuition, and life coaching on basic school skills such as doing homework and taking notes and studying for tests.

My thoughts exactly. This is the dumbest tradition ever. Familes spend thousands of dollars on these ceremonies instead of putting it towards basic needs. By the time these young girls are old enough for college, they begin to wish they had all that money to pay tuition. My family knew better than to have one of these ceremonies for my sister. We found that the money was better spent on other things.

I always thought that "coming out" meant either coming out of the closet as being GAY or coming out meant that she was already pregnant. Seems that this is a Cultural things and it's OK for these young girl to have a baby 9 months after "coming out".

Stop the negativity. I'm sure that the girls are straight A students and that the families already have plenty of money in their 529 Plans.

Excellent post! Also, I've always wondered how many guns, knives, etc are present at these "celebrations"? It seems that we are always reading stories about gang violence involved with these.

And as for the first time they wear makeup the model in the picture doesn't look anything like the brown clowns we see everywhere. Mose of them have more garish color than the Mandrill baboon!

Dont kid yourselves most of the money comes from aunts and uncles(14 uncles in my case). when the whole family pitches in, its nothing. Now if the family is small then its probably going to be a really small celebration.

<quoted text> Rally funny.,,I am laughing all the way to the 529 plan. I can assure you that most of this families don't know this plan and don't care to know. The quinceanera is it for this families that is their way of showing up how much money they can spent rather then showing to the world how educated and in to what college their girl was accepted to. Quinceanera takes tops to Education.
O.K. I have to take the bait on this one. Educate me, what is a 529 plan?

From wikipedia "A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged investment vehicle in the United States designed to encourage saving for the future higher education expenses of a designated beneficiary."

Why do you assume that they not saving for both? Also, it's traditional that all the aunts, uncles, grandparents pitch in for this celebration. It's a cultural celebration. I think it's wonderful.

Quinceneras have been a tradition for many years.
It is part of all Spanish and Latino Culture which makes it important. They bring family together and bring joy to life for all, making the fifteen year old girl feel like a true princess. For me my favorite part is the father/daughter dance. It makes the tradition the loveliest as he invites her to share a waltz with him.

We can thank the Zionists for opening the borders..for changing White European America to third world cess pit.

Multiculturalism has been one of the elements that destroyed this country. All these baby factories set loose into the streets reminds me of rats on cargo ships..both multiply exponentially and over run wherever they "dock".

And suddenly the dance and the music stop and the women start screaming as the crash of an overturned table gets everyone's attention. Two young macho cholos are fighting it out, right there amongst everyone! The two combatants take it outside to the parking lot of the hall and end their fight with one of them shooting the other one in the chest. That's exactly what happened at the first, last, and only quincianera that I have ever attended. They can have every bit of that stupid culture. What a bunch of losers.

But dont we as Americans spend money on our daughters sweet 16? Oh but its ok for us to do it and spend money, but God forbid someone else doing it. Every culture celebrates its youth, whter its a Quincinera or a bah mitzvah. All these post are just racist. Jimmy Carter was right, the Unites states is as racist as it was in the 50's, we have just learned to keep it behind closed doors or in blogs. Im proud of my american mexican heritage and enjoy seeing how other cultures celbrate their youth as well.

educate yourself,

Not all traditions should be continued or else should be to expensive.

Just because you have a tradition doesn't mean you should spend 20k on it and have to ask family members for help. That goes for sweet 16, bah mitzvah, birthdays, and any other celebrations.

When I got married 6 yrs ago, we made a conscious effort to keep the cost down so we can pay for it ourselves without asking for help or take out a loan.

With the economic situation now, moderation should be the key, not excess.

Sad. I often want to share some of these racist comments with my students so they can see how some people think. I never do, though, because it wouldn't be a fair representation of the general population and I don't want to engender an angry reaction. It would require alot of explanation to get the students to understand this type of hostility and ignorance, and- hopefully- to forgive and move on with their lives. The majority of people out there in the world are good and you can find your way to your goals with their guidance, counsel and assistancem. Your own hard work being the primary vehicle for success. The Daily News, unfortunately, has become a haven for too many right wing wackos and moronic racists making lame, mean, and ignorant attempts at social/political/economic analysis.

I'm Latino, married, and have two daughters. We might have some kind of celebration upon their 15th birthday to acknowledge our heritage but it won't be anything grand. I agree the money could be better spent. To each his own though. Too many of these comments, however, are just mean, ugly and wrong.
