Wesleyan Spotlight On Ingrid Bergman
Ingrid Bergman is more than just a movie star. She's 'like a Rolls Royce, or a really good hamburger.'
'She's timeless and always welcome and always beautiful,' says Jeanine Basinger, head of Film Studies at Wesleyan University. 'There's never a time when she's not wonderful.'
Wesleyan is celebrating the great actress this month, with a four-film series of free Wednesday-night screenings, called 'Ingrid Bergman and her Hollywood Leading Men.'
'One of the ways she's never approached is as a partner to the great male stars of her time,' Basinger says. 'Sometimes Greta Garbo and Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were paired with lesser leading men, because they could carry the movie. But Ingrid Bergman, when she was in Hollywood, was paired with top leading men of her time, big-name legendary stars.'
