The Los Angeles Angels became the first team in the major leagues to clinch a playoff spot on Monday night, with Matt Shoemaker pitching five-hit ball into the eighth inning of an 8-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. David Freese and Brennan Boesch homered for the big league-leading Angels , who reduced their magic number to three in the AL West race with their 11th victory in 12 games.

Phillies' Williams pitches a gem in loss

Cashner threw a two-hitter for his third career shutout and the Padres scored on Cody Asche's fielding error in the second inning Monday night to beat the Phillies 1-0. Cashner allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked one in winning for the second straight time after going winless since April 16 against Colorado.

The San Francisco Giants lost their third consecutive game when Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-2 victory Monday night. Trumbo had five RBIs, and Wade Miley bounced back from his shortest outing of the season by pitching seven innings of one-run ball.
