Clutch Cantu delivers again
Jorge Cantu had never faced Chad Gaudin before Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field , but he still had a pretty good idea what wasn't coming from his former Tampa Bay teammate.

Cantu!!!! Again!! AND!!! AGAIN!! Last Saturday the big hits against the Phillies to break it open, last Sunday the walk off winner, Friday the game tying hit, Saturday the game winning hit.
Now do you want to tell me who the MVP of this team is RIGHT NOW???? I'm not talking 5 years from now, I mean RIGHT NOW! And DAN DAN DAN--Sorry buddy. It's just possible you might have to lose the"We only know one way to swing it"--Well, the one way best be a way that doesn't too often result in horrific slumps that take a fine talent like you and make you resemble a Rule 5 Selection.. Supposedly the Rockies wanted Sanchez AND n upper tier prospect for Fuentes> Thanks, but no thanks. We keep the guy with the great stuff under club control for next 5 years, and you guys keep the soon to be free agent, erratic left hander. |

Great win for the team! ESPN claims the Cubs are in a hitting slump recently. No mention of the Marlins pitching staff as usual. Are you blind ESPN!
Hey Lou, can we give Dan a break. He'll be fine when he works on his approach but he's still better than most 2B in the NL. Go Marlins! PS. Why was Robert Andino stretching that hit into a double? Growing pains. |

Speaking of Andino or Amezaga or anyone, can we put one of them in there to relieve some of the slumping guys who just refuse to adjust. Uggla is no better than most National League second basemen. He is Ok and when he is got a chump pitcher throwing him a nice fat inside fastball, he will connect once in a while but can you explain why this guy, his name is UGGLA, goes into these prolonged funks at the plate and he is just refusing to hit back through the middle or to the right side... he is a dumb hitter at the plate and he WILL PROBABLY NEVER LEARN TO HIT THE TOP PITCHERS because he is simply not adjusting. And all he had to do last year was watch Cabrera's approach at the plate or even watch the powerful Pujols, they all adjust and hit in other ways other than trying to pull everything over the fence. They had 20 strike outs today at the plate. That is bad news and you got 3 guys in a horrible funk and where is this batting instructor.... PLEASE. Jacobs is awful and has the same disease. WILLINGHAM looks overmatched and unhappy at the plate and it almost seems that when he gets that 3rd strike he is happy to just get it over with. By the way, for those who are saying that Jacobs is at this point better than Delgado, well Delgado is hitting like a real clean-up hitter ad he is at about 270 or better. Jacobs is hittig 230 or 235. Uggla and Willingham averages and OBP are dropping like the facial hair of Yankees under the "great" (LOL) Girardi. Oh, and Miguel Cabrera is getting close to 300 so don't let Dave Samson tell you that Cabrera is this or that. He is a great hitter who likes butter and a little hummus hibbitus on both side of his pita bread. But Papi Ortiz is a big guy too. Just think that the Marlins have struck out like a thousand times and averaged like 1.75 runs per game offensively in the last 5 or 6 games. And that all of that is with Jacobs-Uggla-Willingham and those catchers giving away outs by the truck. THEY MIGHT NEED TO BRING UP SOME OF THE YOUNG MINOR LEAGUERS to see if they can do somethig. |

Trade Hermida? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Lets not forget who actually won this game. Jeremy Hermida. Y'know...the guy that sent it to extras with 2 HR's...the guy who ran down Theriot's fly ball in the corner, in extra's. The guy who scored the GW run. The guy who most call a bust and want traded <rolls eyes>. Btw, Cantu can give these guys lessons on how to hit with .RISP...for sure. Big Win. The Mets lost in 14 innings. BTW, our bullpen looks great, as of late. Hopefully we get more quality starts, like Volstad gave today. Those 6 innings from the starters are huge. Prevents the bullpen from tiring out! |

The local sports stations should be ashamed. I turned on the early news for Channel 7 and had to hear about the start of Dolphins training camp, Brett Favre, and other NFL news before they mentioned the Marlin's game. The MARLINS BEAT THE CUBS WHO ARE IN WRIGLEY FOR THE 2ND DAY IN A ROW IN DRAMATIC FASHION. Prior to this weekend the Cubs had only lost 12 games there the entire year! We are in a playoff atmosphere and this pathetic town focuses on a bunch of losers. Show some pride. IT'S INEXCUSABLE!

Easy on Dan. The guy's a two time all-star at a very young age. He'll learn. |

He is not that young. He's 28 I believe. Which means he is in his prime years. If he would adjust at the plate like great hitters do, he would not go through these prolonged slumps and people would not talk bad about him as much as they do now. DAMN HELICOPTER SWING!!! |
|
Dear Marlinman, That's all I want him to do is adjust. Does it look like to you that he has made ANY attempt at all to adjust???
As far as Hermida--I compliment him. This is what he was expected to do 3 years ago when he came up. It was at that time he was viewed as one of the BEST pure hitting prospects in the game. Has he looked like that since the first ever at bat grand slam?? That is what has been so fraustrating because I've read those reports and then we have all seen him evolve into this guy who looks like he is up there trying to coax walks rather than acting like a great young hitter with a great power stroke. just do what you are projected to do--or at least come close. Do all of you realize that if Olivo was still with this team they would have a 5 game lead. Project Olivo's expected RBI's and Homers as opposed to what we have received from that position. I bet Beinfest, Lauria and Sampson have a hard time falling asleep just realizing the little--comparatively--expendi ture needed to have a 1st place team with the notoriety that goes with it. Might have even helped with the Braman situation as attendance figures would already be up--and the publicity would look good. What did you think about the Buster olney speculation of yesterday involving Manny to the Marlins. No Thanks!! And think what the price would be and then impact on payroll unless Red Sox picked up a VERY significant portion. Manny makes 13,200 AN INNING!!! Guy can only hit a baseball, couldn't find his way out of a phone booth withouy a platoon of Army Rangers and premiere cancer researchers are making 100,000 a year. Oh YES--We are decadent and screwed up and you know what that usually entails. |

Uggla's been a steal for us. How many 2B have his HR's? Going thru a slump in a 162 game season is commonplace.

Allan B,When does a slump TRANSCEND aslump?? Give me an idea 2 for 49, 2 for 50!!! When do you get concerned??

Lou, you cant put a fixed number on it when a players been great for an extended period. I think he leads the team in HR's and RBI's . So he's a top producer. I'm not concerned at all other than his injured ankle. That coincided with his slump. And Uggla's a streaky hitter anyway. Lets not forget he's won many games for us. He is swinging for the fences which I have no problem with when he has the # of HR's he has. |

Hey the guy's name is Buster so when was the last time anyone named Buster did much for our civilization ... let's see... umm, no, you would at least think that in Egyptology there might have been a Pharaoh named Buster but no, no cigar there, there is Ramses but not Buster, King Tut but not Buster. Imagine that this Buster of ESPN is so far fetched with Manny as a companion to the great hitting instructor the Marlins have. Well, maybe there is a way for Manny to come and have his Santeria priest in Little Havana. That is... With the Loria's having no funds they want to spend on anything, they will probably recall ALL OF THOSE OBESE MEN that were part of the team at the beginning, you know, the act that said if you are real fat you can ridicule yourself (that idea had to come from Dave Samson for sure) in front of the world. So the Marlins trade the whole set of OBESE MEN to John Henry and Boston for Manny Ramirez and the Sox still have to pay most of Manny's contract a la Mike Hampton and keep the OBESE ones happy with clam chowder and imitation lobster meat. That is the kind of deal the Marlins would make and then of course that would be some combination with Manny hitting 3rd, protected by Mike Jacobs and Uggla, hitting around him, rather than Papi, Lowell, Pedroia, Youkilis. Manny would be a real happy camper. Imagine how many good pitches Manny might see in a season with Jacobs behind him. That is why you have to hand it to Miguel Cabrera who was protected by those guys and still hit well over 300. And the Loria family ankle biting Chihuahua, Dave Samson, still has the audacity of going on the airwaves to dump on Cabrera. So, OK, we say yes to Buster, we get Manny Ramirez straight up for the Marlin OBESE MEN Entertainment act and a "long past its prime" musical group that the Marlins rent for a bag of salted high cholesterol peanuts they feed the OBESE ones (I say, Cheap Trick sounds about the right band to throw in this deal). By the way, hiring a band called Cheap Trick right after the Obese Men dancing trick takes a great deal of creativity and tells you how much scorn and contempt the owners of the Marlins have for their fans. If the Manny deal and the stadium does not go through then I wonder if Samson will take Cheap Trick and The Obese Ones to Vegas or San Antonio (I heard Peoria and many of the depressed economies of this country are all looking for Baseball franchises owned by people who want to scalp the taxpayers for a stadium ... there are dozens of these cities out there waiting for a guy like Samson to show up at their door). |

We all want Dan Uggla and the rest to succeed but all we want is that Uggla succeeds a bit more when he is not fed a groovy one fat fasball on the inside part of the plate. He has not been able to hit much on the outside part of the plate or any creative pitching. FORGET about the all star stuff, OK, George Bush was an "All Star" in the eyes of many voters of this country back when no one knew what a ninny he turned out to be and he managed to put this country in reverse and start World War III and create millions of more enemies... so what are we going to say, don't criticize the guy, he was an all star. Look, all we are asking is that if you got a situation asking for a bit of adjusting and try to punch the ball to right or to make contact and to stop being surprised when a fat fastball is not fed to him. He seems to get his knees buckled all the time. All you have to do is watch him and see that all his swings are pulling to the left, dropping his side to the left, and swinging UNDER the ball on many high ones. Several of these guys bust out of slumps when a pitcher starts grooving the ball on the inside part of the plate and then they go on these prolonged slumps because they are all going for the fence. And the statistics bear it out. Lots of homers and lots of strike outs. Must of us play ball, some in high school, some of us in college and into the minor leagues and there is room to make an adjustment, AT LEAST WHEN YOU HAVE TWO STRIKES AND A SITUATION THAT DEMANDS AND REQUIRES TO MAKE CONTACT. It should not be all or nothing all the time. |

BTW, we all really want Uggla and his brothers in strike out infamy to be better and great but if you are going to bash it out with homers only and win games that way, I doubt that there is a future in that and both Marlin teams that have won World Series were not like that at all. There was a lot of gap hitting, stole bases, drag bunts, combined with very decent pitching and that was the formula. And ever since the glory days of excellent pitchig and a 3 run homer that my favorite manager Earl Weaver used to live by many years ago, there has not been teams that have lived successfully with that formula.
If that was a such a terrific formula, then all of teams will have pitching staffs full of unseasoned pitchers (as the Marlins have) and Dave Kingmans who with the Mets and the Cubs of yesteryear perfected the idea of strike out 4 times and hit one homer and if you got lucky, the homer was a walk off and won the game but, Kingman was no such a great player that we remember although his good looks and physique made him last longer than merited. Let's put it this way, if he looked like Amezaga he would have spend a great deal of time in the minor leagues instead of in the Bigs. And the same can be said for certain Marlins that when they are going bad, their muscles and name and good looks keeps them in the line up. WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT... IF JACOBS WITH THE EXACT SAME GAME HE HAS NOW LOOKED AND TALKED LIKE AMEZAGA, the stereotypical little latin utility man, HE WOULD NOT BE HITTING CLEAN-UP and he might have spent a great deal more time in the minor leagues. |
