A Davie pilot crashed his small plane in eastern Tennessee in December 2006, killing himself and three family members, likely after becoming disoriented in clouds and darkness, the National Transportation Safety Board has ruled. Killed were pilot Nelson McPherson Jr., his wife, Debbie, both 43, and their two daughters, Danielle, 19, and Kayla, 13. McPherson, a men's clothing chain executive, had planned to fly his family to Tennessee for the holidays. He had first flown his single-engine Beech Bonanza A36 to Jacksonville and Gainesville before heading for Lovell Field Airport, north of Chattanooga, Tenn. on Dec. 22, 2006. For the last 14 minutes of the ill-fated flight, as he approached for a landing, McPherson struggled to control the plane while it was engulfed in clouds. That was evident by his tape-recorded conversation with an air traffic controller. 'Are you able to climb to 3,000 [feet]?' an air traffic controller asked, after noticing McPherson had dropped below the assigned altitude. Read more
